Questions
- What is a preflop chart?
- A preflop chart is a grid of the 169 starting hands in Texas hold'em, colored by what to do with each one before the flop. This chart shows which hands to raise first in from each seat at a 6-max table, and what to do when someone raises ahead of you.
- What hands should I open from the button in 6-max?
- Every pocket pair, every suited ace, suited kings down to K5s, suited connectors and one-gappers down to 54s and 64s, offsuit broadways down to JTo, and offsuit steal hands like A8o, A7o, A5o, K9o, Q9o, J9o, T9o, and 98o. That is 72 hands, about 36% of all combos, raised to 2.5 big blinds.
- What does RFI mean?
- RFI stands for raise first in. It is the decision to open the pot with a raise when nobody has entered before you. This chart is an RFI chart: each color is the earliest seat a hand opens from.
- How wide should I open under the gun?
- About 8% of hands: pairs from AA down to 77, AKs through ATs, KQs, KJs, QJs, JTs, T9s, and AKo and AQo. Five players are still to act, so the range stays tight and strong.
- What should I do when someone raises before me?
- Three-bet with the strongest hands and a few suited-ace bluffs, call with hands that play well after the flop, and fold the rest. The chart gives exact 3-bet and call lists for the button against an under-the-gun open, the button against a cutoff open, and the big blind against a button open.
